Aircraft Valve: Common Solenoid Valve (CSV) Design for Single- or Multi-Coil Requirements

Application: Aerospace and Medical Valves

Platform: Airbus A350XWB, F-35 Lightning JSF

The Application

The Common Solenoid Valve (CSV) Design applies to single- or multi-coil solenoid valves for manifold insertion, cartridge mounting or to drive other actuators. These valves are offered in 2-way or 3-way versions, and contain a similar 'DNA structure' with scalable commonality of part shapes that yield a cost-conscious pilot valve solution.

Typical applications for the CSV Design in the aerospace industry are for piloting or controlling actuators or larger valves in demanding and extreme environments (temperature, vibration) with high reliability requirements. These applications are as follows:

  • Aircraft Engines
  • Engine Fuel Systems
  • Primary Flight Controls
  • Aircraft Braking Systems
  • Flap & Stab Actuator
  • Auxiliary Power Unit
  • Environmental Controls
  • Landing Gear Actuators
  • Secondary Flight Controls
  • Anti-Icing
  •  Heat Management System
  • Hydraulic System
  • Nosewheel Steering
  • Vacuum Toilet System

The CSV Design by South Bend Controls also addresses the physical constraints of aerospace applications, such as envelope mounting and weight requirements.

Product Family Philosophy

This product family is intended to leverage SBC's expertise in the medical products - high volume, lower cost ?-with the exacting nature of Aerospace products. Coupled with the patent-pending Contoured Coiltm listed below, SBC has a cost effective superior product which can be utilized on multiple platforms.

The Solution

In order to mitigate risk and develop a robust component solution, the South Bend Controls Engineering Team utilizes analytical models and proven software tools when developing new component applications. These include the following:

  • Valve Flow & Solenoid Force Calculations
  • Finite Element Magnetic Modeling
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics Software
  • Structural Finite Element Analysis

These methods, combined with the heritage and pedigree of over 70 years of fluid control component designs for Aerospace applications, yield the CSV Design with several key features:

·         Contoured Coiltm Patent-Pending Solenoid Technology

  • Optimizes magnetic efficiency
  • Eliminates costly manufacturing processes
  • Dramatically reduces overall weight of component
  • Proven ball-over-seat sealing design for low leakage and high reliability
  • Heritage design, flight-qualified in applications on existing aircraft platforms
  • Scalable design applied to all new opportunities
  • Single-, Dual-, Quad-Coil offerings for redundancy if required
  • Corrosion-resistant wetted surfaces
  • Integrated wire mesh filter screen to prevent larger particulate contamination

The result is a simple, elegant design that meets or exceeds all product specification requirements for multiple aircraft platforms.
